Woman faces two felony counts in accident that left dozens of bicyclists injured.

The woman who caused a bicycle accident that left over a dozen riders injured now faces two felony counts.

According to police reports, approximately 100 members of the cycling enthusiast group Midnight Ridazz were riding near the Baldwin Hills Scenic overlook this past June when a woman plowed her car into the crowd. Christine Dahab, 27, told police she was distracted by her phone shortly before the accident.

Over a dozen riders were hurt in the accident, with one victim suffering critical injuries after being thrown into the car's windshield. Culver City police investigated the accident and found that while the riders bore some responsibility for being in the area so late at night, ultimately, Ms. Dahab was responsible for causing the victims' injuries.

Now, Ms. Dahab faces two felony counts of driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury and driving while intoxicated causing injury. Her arraignment hearing is scheduled for a Los Angeles courtroom on December 22nd. She could potentially face time in state prison if convicted of the charges.

In addition to the criminal charges she faces, Ms. Dahab may also face civil penalties if the bicyclists she injured choose to file a personal injury claim. Under California law, bicycle accident victims who sustain serious injuries because of someone else's negligence are entitled to seek damages for their medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.

Fortunately, no one was killed in this bicycle accident but other California bicyclists might not be so lucky. In 2009, nearly 100 bicyclists were killed in California alone, which accounted for approximately 1/6 of all bicycle accident deaths nationwide. Thousands more suffered serious injuries after being involved in a bicycle accident.
